Engineering vs. Engineering Technology: The Decision That Changed My Direction

Mar 30, 2026

When I started at Purdue University, I thought I had it all figured out.

I was in engineering. Good grades, strong math background, the “right” path. On paper, everything made sense.

But somewhere in my sophomore year, I started to feel it.

Not that it was too hard. Not that it wasn’t valuable.

It just didn’t feel like me.

Most of my time was spent in lectures, working through theory, solving equations. Meanwhile, outside of class, I was taking things apart, rebuilding components, and trying to actually make things work. That contrast kept getting louder.

The turning point came when I realized Purdue’s engineering program was heavily theoretical, and that there was an entirely different path I hadn’t even considered: engineering technology.

Up until that moment, it wasn’t even on my radar.

But when I looked into it, it immediately clicked. The focus was more hands-on, more applied, closer to how things are actually built and run in the real world.

That shift changed everything for me.

What I learned from that experience is this:

The decision between engineering and engineering technology isn’t about which one is “better.” It’s about alignment.

How do you naturally approach problems?
What kind of work keeps you engaged?

Because if those don’t match your path, you’ll feel it.

If you’re trying to figure this out, I put together a free guide that walks through the differences in a practical, no-BS way based on real experience, not just theory.

It’s designed to help you make a decision that actually fits how you think and work.

If you’re in this position right now, it should give you some clarity.

Curious, what’s been the most confusing part of this decision for you?
